It's a good board game. It's equal parts strategy and luck (like poker?), and the game doesn't last forever. You can usually play a 4 person game in 45 minutes to an hour... I've had Monopoly games that have lasted way longer than that. The video game (I've played the xbox version and the iphone version) is fun because it's faster paced, and introduces you to the rules in an automated way. It also allows you to develop strategies you can bring back to the board game.
Basically, I was introduced to it by trying to play the board game and realized what I was doing wrong from a strategy and rules standpoint after playing the video game.
The moves you make in the first few turns are very important.
